💀 Stellantis Plans to Eliminate Chrome from Cars: Health Risks and Sustainability
According to a CNN article published on June 14, 2024, Stellantis, the maker of Jeep, Dodge, Ram, and other brands, has decided to abandon the use of chrome in new cars due to environmental and health concerns.
The "Death of Chrome" plan, as explained by Ralph Gilles, Chief Global Designer at Stellantis, aims to replace chrome with safer alternatives such as satin stainless steel and finishes in bronze and graphite, creating new designs that attract consumers. This change is supported by market trends like "blackout packages" and the innovative use of light for exterior and interior decorations.
This decision is driven not only by the dangers of chrome but also by regulatory uncertainties that have certainly not helped. Additionally, past conduct by some galvanizers has contributed to creating a stigma around Cr6+, but it seems more a matter of fashion, almost greenwashing. However, it is important to note that decorative chromium plating based on Cr3+, which is not dangerous, has now reached sufficient quality levels to be a viable alternative.
Volkswagen, another major name in the automotive industry, is following the same path, seeking alternative solutions for a safer and more sustainable future.
